Our team will evaluate the mother, assess the puppies, and identify why labor is not progressing. Care may include a physical examination, bloodwork, ultrasound, radiographs, IV fluids, oxygen support, medication, and close monitoring.
A cesarean section may be recommended when the mother or puppies are unstable, the birth canal is obstructed, labor has stalled, or medical management is not appropriate or has not worked. During surgery, the puppies are delivered through an abdominal and uterine incision while a coordinated team supports anesthesia, the mother, and the newborns.
