How PU Surgery Helps

Emergency treatment begins by stabilizing the cat, relieving the obstruction when possible, correcting fluid and electrolyte problems, controlling pain, and identifying contributing causes. Diagnostics may include bloodwork, urinalysis, urine culture, radiographs, ultrasound, or contrast studies.

During PU surgery, the narrow portion of the male cat’s urethra is removed and a wider permanent opening is created. This allows crystals, mucus plugs, and small stones to pass more easily and reduces the risk of another obstruction at the narrowest part of the urethra.

PU surgery does not prevent bladder inflammation, infection, or new stone formation. Ongoing medical management and follow-up remain important after surgery.

When is PU surgery recommended?

PU may be considered when a male cat has repeated obstructions, cannot be unblocked successfully, has severe urethral damage or scarring, or cannot be managed reliably with medical treatment alone.

Can I wait until morning if my cat is still passing a few drops?

No. Straining, repeated litter-box visits, or producing only drops can indicate a partial or complete obstruction. Your cat should be evaluated immediately.

Will PU surgery prevent every future urinary problem?

No. The procedure reduces the risk of blockage at the narrow penile urethra, but it does not prevent bladder inflammation, infection, crystals, or stones. Diet, hydration, medication, and follow-up may still be needed.
