How Hemilaminectomy Surgery Helps

The veterinary team begins with a neurologic examination and diagnostic imaging to locate spinal cord compression and determine its severity. Testing may include bloodwork, radiographs, CT, or other advanced imaging selected for the patient.

During a hemilaminectomy, the surgeon removes a small portion of bone from one side of the vertebra to access the spinal canal. Herniated disc material can then be removed to relieve pressure on the spinal cord.
